Some coworking spaces are failing. Some are thriving. Hangar Dreys intends to be entirely different.  Remote work is here to stay, yet the coworking business model isn’t necessarily built for the remote worker, it is built for the growing startup or the satellite operation moving into town.  There is a literal financial incentive for today’s coworking spaces to move their members from the hot desk, to the 1-person office, and on up the line until they are occupying the rad corner offices with the sweet views.  The benefits of such a coworking space include free consultations with local attorneys and other industry relevant consultants, and networking with experienced entrepreneurs.  They want you to succeed, and grow, and it’s great.  If you are a 1-person startup with intentions to scale or first boots on the ground for a bigger business, I highly recommend this option and have myself been a beneficiary..

The problem is that most remote workers are NOT looking to expand into 2+ person offices. Most remote workers are individuals. They work for larger companies that have no plans on setting up shop locally.  They are contractors, coaches, consultants, freelancers, and solopreneurs.  One thing these professionals share is their location-flexibility.  Some choose alternative lifestyles, such as the digital nomads.  However you slice it; the current coworking space is not built for them.  You can find them working from home, in coffee shops, and yes, in coworking spaces.  If you ask them why, it is because of the community.  Science tells us that building meaningful relationships while at work is critical to happiness and health.  Indeed, people who have more meaningful relationships live longer and thrive along the way.  Don’t take my word for it, read “The Good Life.”  This book chronicles The Harvard Study of Adult Development which is, in their own words, “…an extraordinary scientific endeavor that began in 1938 and is still going strong.”

The bottom line is this: What happens when we think about coworking spaces differently? What happens when we build a business model that promotes mental, physical, and social health for its members?  Rather than having an economic incentive to help the entrepreneur move into larger spaces, the incentive is to build a community of thriving remote workers.  This basic premise was the seed planted to grow the idea for Hangar Dreys.  What happens?  Follow along the Hangar Dreys blog and join the mailing list to follow along on this journey.
